The key mechanism that enables a time limited restraint is a lock that is held in place with ice that then releases as it melts.
In its most basic form ice locks can be a bag filled with ice hung from a fixed point with a metal ring that secures a second rope. The ring is unable to slip off the bag until the ice has melted.
